Rel no follow in squidoo: links that count

by Katinka Hesselink on September 8, 2008

All lensmasters should know a bit about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). For this post I decided to get back to basics: what links within squidoo actually count towards your link popularity? In other words: which links will help your page be found by search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing?

For this post I simply looked at the source of a random squidoo page. I did NOT check every module or every squidoo feature. I did get a look at a decent percentage.

favorited by: no-followed

general squidoo links at the bottom: do-followed

guestbook: do-followed (at least the entries shown on the page). Links in the body of the comments: not followed.

delicio bookmarks module: no-followed!

amazon-module: no followed (which is as it should be) That’s including links you put in there yourself.

profile page: no links out to fans

Related lenses: do-followed

Tag pages: do followed

lensroll: do-followed

The Rel-no-follow tag (or attribute) looks as followed on your code. The following is the code of a link. The bolded part is the rel no follow stuff. This will mean the link is not counted by google towards link popularity. There has been some indication that the other links on the page will count less if there are rel no followed links on a page.

<a href=”http://www.site.com/page.html” rel=”nofollow”>text</a>

[Updated nov. 2009. Note that these things sometimes change rapidly on squidoo.]

Any html links that are coded into the Guestbook comments are tagged with nofollow, which might deter spammers (it might not).

Here are some more nofollows: Twitter, YouTube, Google Blogsearch, Fresh Lenses/Lensmasters (on Groups) and Group Discussions. Probably a good thing.

Also, remember that the RSS and eBay modules can’t be ‘seen’ by search engines, and so don’t count as links. And something else to be aware of: if you create a link in the description of a YouTube, eBay or Amazon module, it’ll get tagged with nofollow.
